The story

A universe built around them.

When Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae began planning their Phantom Arcade, they wanted something that could tell their family's story - not artwork built around a single game, movie or character.

Johnny worked directly with an artist to create an entirely original, hand-drawn collection of graphics made exclusively for their arcade. The concept brought together the movies, video games, comics and pop-culture icons that have meant the most to their family, combining them into one colorful universe.

References inspired by Star Wars, Marvel, Nintendo, Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jurassic Park, Voltron and more stretch across the cabinet's side panels. Rather than feeling like separate pieces placed together, every character was illustrated in a consistent style and layered over an energetic mixture of neon colors, comic-book textures and retro arcade patterns.

The centerpiece is the custom control panel, designed to resemble a classic fighting-game character-selection screen. Johnny, Candice, their family and even their pets are transformed into selectable characters, surrounded by the heroes, villains and creatures that inspired the rest of the artwork. 'Player One' and 'Player Two' details complete the idea, making the entire family part of the game.

Even the custom ARCADE lettering was drawn as a mashup, with every letter influenced by a different corner of gaming and pop culture. It is the kind of artwork that reveals something new every time you look at it.

The finished arcade is more than a collection of Johnny and Candice's favorite things. It is a one-of-one family portrait - drawn by hand, built around their personalities and turned into a playable centerpiece by Phantom Arcades.
